Internet users are increasing at tremendous rate but technical literacy is isn’t. So the web is being full of duplicate content. A small technical issue in a website can have a large effect on search engine ranking of a website.

Lots of duplicate version of pages can be an issue of a website to get their content filtered. This is called an canonical issue. To solve this problem major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have united their hands. They together offer a way to reduce duplicate content clutter and make things easier for everyone.

Duplicate

Now these search engines support a format that allows websiter owner to publicly specify your preferred version of a URL.

If your website has an identical or vastly similar content that’s accessible through multiple URLs, you need not to worry now. You can simply add this
tag to specify your preferred version inside the section of all the duplicate content URLs.

For example:

If the original content page of your website has URL: http://www.zealousweb.com/ and the duplicate content is located at: http://www.zealousweb.com/web_solutions.htm.

Just put the <link rel=”canonical” href=” http://www.zealousweb.com” />
in http://www.zealousweb.com/web_solutions.htm page, inside header tag. This will tell Search Engines about duplicate content issue.

This standard can be adopted by all major search engines, when crawling and indexing your site. This tag will operate in a similar way to a 301 redirect for all URLs that display the page with this tag.

Benefits:

* Helps to get out of duplicate content worries
* It also helps to make sure that properties such as link popularity are consolidated to your preferred version.
* consolidated link popularity to single preffered URL
